Energy
Hydroelectric, solar and wind power to replace diesel, wood and charcoal.
Haiti faces two energy challenges: a broken electricity sector and a dependency on charcoal. Only a minority of the population has access to electricity, and many of those connections are informal. Many businesses rely on environmentally unfriendly diesel generators, and food is often cooked using wood or charcoal.
Apart from the environmental damage of cutting trees for fuel, cooking with firewood and charcoal exposes families to smoke and indoor air pollution. Developing green energy — solar farms, wind farms and hydroelectric power — can change the way the country works as a whole, how businesses run and how families live.
